Building a Competitive Space for Collegiate eSports

Harrisburg University of Science and Technology engaged New Era Technology to develop a design solution for a new eSports practice space that could support both current performance needs and long-term growth. The project required close collaboration with university faculty and selected manufacturing partners to create an environment tailored to the demands of competitive collegiate gaming. From the outset, the goal was to deliver a high-quality practice facility that would provide the technology, functionality, and flexibility needed for a strong eSports program. Through this partnership, New Era helped bring together the design and technical elements required to create a dedicated space built for performance, usability, and future expansion.

Designing for Performance in a Complex Competitive Environment

Creating an effective eSports practice space required more than installing a large display system. New Era Technology had to develop a solution that addressed the physical constraints of the Harrisburg facility while ensuring that what appeared on the video wall closely matched each player’s individual terminal. This was especially important in a competitive setting, where visual accuracy and responsiveness directly affect both gameplay and the training experience.

The project also involved the challenge of translating fast-paced, high-motion game action to a large-format video wall viewed from a relatively short distance. Maintaining image clarity, consistency, and synchronization at that scale required careful consideration of display performance, resolution, and system design. At the same time, the environment needed to preserve the high frame rates essential to competitive gaming, making it critical to balance visual impact with the speed and precision players expect.

Delivering a High-Performance eSports Environment

New Era Technology designed a solution centered on a 17-panel Barco UniSee video wall, supported by audio, signal processing, and a Crestron control system that gave users flexibility in signal routing and screen layout. The team also identified infrastructure requirements early and provided design drawings for inclusion in the construction package. This approach created a high-performance environment that could support multiple gameplay and coaching scenarios while maintaining a simple user experience.

To deliver the speed and visual quality required for competitive gaming, the solution used a 10GB SDVoE network with zero-latency signal distribution, Aurora AV over IP transceivers, and Dante audio routing across the same network infrastructure. The video wall enabled multiple display configurations for multiplayer matches or focused player analysis, while its bezel-less design maintained image consistency across layouts. Pendant ceiling speakers were also installed throughout the facility to provide sound masking and improve the overall gaming environment.

A Lasting Asset for Performance and Growth

The completed eSports practice suite delivered more than a functional gaming environment. Through collaboration between Harrisburg University and New Era Technology, the project created a purpose-built space that met immediate needs while supporting future growth. The facility has become a standout part of the university’s eSports program and the broader collegiate gaming community. It also helped support national-level success, including the HU Overwatch team’s 2019 National Championship.
