Integrated Wayfinding Signage at Leading Airport

At Indianapolis International Airport, improving navigation required a solution that could clearly direct travelers to Concourses A and B while fitting the visual standards of a highly regarded airport environment. New Era Technology helped deliver two 40-foot Wayfinding Towers with portal wings that combined architectural scale with practical guidance. The installation integrated motion detection, brightness adaptation, pedestrian-responsive behavior, and locally inspired digital graphics to support a clearer and more engaging traveler experience. With their distinctive zig-zag form, the towers function as both information tools and visual features, improving navigation while enhancing the atmosphere of the terminal. 

A key challenge was integrating direct-view LED technology into a 4K digital canvas spread across non-contiguous surfaces on two 40-foot superstructures and portal wings while maintaining a seamless visual experience. Because the display extended across separate architectural elements, the solution required precise coordination to preserve alignment, continuity, and overall visual impact.

The project became more complex because the structures’ zig-zag, multi-faceted design required digital content to remain fluid and cohesive across irregular forms. In a high-visibility airport environment, the solution also needed to balance technical precision with a polished presentation that could function as both wayfinding and digital art.

New Era Technology worked closely with a local architecture firm, an AV consultant, and a graphic design company to create a coordinated solution for the airport’s directional challenge. This collaborative approach allowed the project to bring together structural design, visual communication, and technology in a unified way. Rather than treating wayfinding as a standalone element, the team developed an installation that could guide travelers while also contributing to the overall character of the space. The result was a solution designed to be both functional and visually engaging.

The completed installation featured a digital art canvas, four one-of-a-kind structures, and two informational displays that worked together to improve navigation through the airport. Each element was designed to support clearer traveler movement while maintaining a distinctive and cohesive visual identity. By combining information delivery with an architectural and artistic presence, the solution helped transform a directional need into a more intuitive arrival experience. It also created a stronger connection between practical wayfinding and the atmosphere of the terminal.

The completed Wayfinding Project delivered more than clearer signage at Indianapolis International Airport. By helping travelers distinguish the entrances to Concourses A and B from the surrounding retail environment, the installation made movement through the atrium more direct and understandable. It also reduced the need for traveler assistance by presenting key information at the right points along the journey. Details such as TSA PreCheck locations and checkpoint wait times added practical value to the overall experience.

At the same time, the project was designed to do more than improve navigation alone. The combination of integrated technology and thoughtful design introduced a sense of authenticity, visual interest, and welcome for people entering and exiting the airport. Rather than functioning as a purely informational system, the installation became part of the broader atmosphere of the terminal. As a result, it created a distinctive and lasting experience that can continue to serve travelers for years to come.
