Why is Identity and Access Management so important in the world today?

In June we had the pleasure of welcoming Kieran Way on work experience placement. One of the tasks we gave Kieran was to write about the importance of IAM. So with no further ado, here is his article:

IAM Is very important in the digital world today for many reasons which I will cover below.

Cyber security

As most people know cyber security is very important in the world today due to many data breaches and confidential information that gets passed along the Internet.

Identity and access management ensures only the right individuals can access specific systems, data and resources – this is very important as you don’t want certain files to get on the wrong hands which could then leads to a major security risk.

Many data breaches happen due to stolen or hacked devices, luckily IAM helps detect and block, this this is very helpful as it is another layer of security

Cloud and remote work

Throughout my week working here at New Era I’ve understood that most organisations use cloud-based services like Microsoft 365. IAM becomes essential to manage identities across platforms when working from home to ensure more security.

Online identity

Due to the growing of the Internet and the use of online devices it is important that our digital footprints and online identity is protected by IAM for some of the following reasons:

• Impersonation: impersonation is very important to know about as people can sell misleading information and trick someone into thinking they were selling something or doing something which wasn’t true.
• Hijacking : Any computer could get stolen, and information could be taken and sent around, and as I said earlier, can get into the wrong hands.
• And finally, misuse: some people may think it is acceptable to take advantage of the power they have and misusing their computer to destroy or damage a business in a certain way (usually financially).

Hopefully that gives you an insight why IAM – Identity and access management is so important, luckily as the years go on I’m sure it will develop and grow to be more and more secure.
